Design Ideas for the Backyard

When it comes to creating a backyard landscape, there are many different options and designs to consider. Before you begin any project, you need to consider what look you would like to achieve. Is the area going to be for relaxation, for entertaining, for children? Understanding what you hope to achieve in the space, will help you to understand how to go about the design process.

Most often the backyard setting will be used for a variety of uses. The idea is to design the landscape so that it can accommodate everything you need it to. When trying to achieve areas for entertainment, children and relaxation, start thinking about the setting as a living space, and not just outside. Design your outdoor rooms, just as you would your indoor rooms, based upon the activities that will be used in them. To create a workable and effective design, you need to make the most use of the space available. If the backyard is on a slope, this can present a lot of problems for many of the typical backyard uses. In this case, it may be beneficial to create a deck or patio. This can either be directly attached to your home, or it can be built out in your landscape. You could also choose to terrace the landscape, as this will make for more usable space as well.

Another popular design scheme centers on a backyard pool or a large water feature. These can involve a lot of work and upkeep, but they are also a great source of entertainment and enjoyment. Perfect for settings where there is a lot of entertainment or where there are children who need to be entertained. When it comes to designing a landscape based around the pool, there are some key safety factors which should be considered. For example the flooring around the pool needs to be slip proof when wet, and it is always a good idea to add locked fencing so small children cannot access the pool alone. If your plan is to create an outdoor entertaining area that centers on cookouts or barbeques with family and friends, consider the creation of an outdoor kitchen. This can be an expensive, but also well worth it. An outdoor kitchen may simple be a grill, but you can also creating brick ovens, and entire enclosed rooms. This can save in heating your home during the hot summer season as well.

Planting themes can be an exciting idea for a garden as well, adding interest and delight. This is a wonderful idea for that place in your landscape that will be reserved for relaxing! This is the space you can make into anything you want, add any plants you want, and choose not to follow the typical gardening rules. This may involve a tropical theme, a beach theme, using only certain colors, rock gardens, or using only one species of flowers or plants! Most landscapes are not perfect, and there may be problem areas that need to be considered. If there is a soggy area of your landscape, consider planting wetland plants, these are beautiful and will create a good solution to your problems. Some areas are prone to weeds and invasive plants that take over, if this is the case adopt a form of weed control so the plants will not take over.

If you have children that spend a lot of time outdoors, create safe zones for them, include a tree fort or a sandbox, a place that will keep them entertained, safely, for hours on end.  Make sure the plants added are safe plants and not poisonous or may cause rashes. The same rules applies to pets, make sure all the plants in your landscape are safe for your furry friends even if they are in garden planters.
