Autumn is the perfect time to create decorative garden containers! As the summer blooms fade from sight, it is the perfect time to decorate in the deep and rich shade that fall offers. The leaves change to beautiful shades of reds, yellows, and oranges, creating the perfect inspiration for your garden planters!
Often, once summer leaves, gardeners tend to hang up their tools for the year, but this is a mistake! Gardening certainly does not need to end with the end of summer! There are wonderful plants that are hardy enough to withstand the onset on cool weather, while adding beauty and charm to your setting, allowing the gardener to garden well into the colds season! This is especially perfect for container gardening!
Begin the process by find some beautiful, decorative and exciting planters. Urns are a great choice for porches, as they add a classical touch. Tubs and bowls are great for more natural settings, and they can hold a variety of different fall plants, making a stunning container garden. Finally, window boxes should not be ignored either. These will add a decorative fall touch to your house!
Now that we have some idea for containers established, let’s take a look at some of the great autumn plants available. Mums are one of the most popular plants. They come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. They can be planted alone in a single container, or consider a variety of colorful mums of differing sizes set in a creative arrangement. These are great plants to place on porch steps, around a mailbox, or to flank an entrance way. Other great plants for fall include vegetables like kale or cabbage. These are very active in the late summer and fall, and come in deep greens and purples, making them perfect for a container garden. They offer unique shapes and look perfect placed in equally unique containers!
So how do you create the perfect autumn container? Well add a mixture of different plants of varying sixes! For example use kale to one side, with a beautiful mum to the other, and place a tall grass to the back of the container. Place a small pumpkin or gourd in the planter to add festive decoration to the container! You could also create a grouping of planters on a porch or patio and place carved jack-o-lanterns on the floor with them. This is a fun and welcoming accent for any fall garden!
The key using containers and planters in the fall is filling them with hardy plants that reflect the changing colors autumn brings. These plants allow the gardener to stay busy late into the fall season, keeping their garden setting beautiful! By using pumpkins, acorns, or gourds, you can create wonderful arrangements that will last through the Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons!
